What is a Burglar Alarm System?
A burglar alarm system is an electronic security network designed to detect intruders through sensors, trigger an audible alert, and — in monitored systems — automatically notify a 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) or emergency services.
When an intruder breaks in, passive infrared (PIR) sensors, door contacts, or break-beam detectors trigger the control panel, which activates the external sounder and sends an alert. For monitored systems, that alert reaches trained operators within seconds who can verify the alarm and dispatch a response.
The primary goal is deterrence. A visible alarm system significantly reduces the likelihood of a break-in. Monitored systems add a direct response capability that bells-only systems simply cannot provide. Whether you need a home burglar alarm system or a fully graded commercial intruder alarm system, the right setup starts with understanding exactly what your property requires.
Types of Burglar Alarm Systems
Not all burglar alarm systems are the same. The right system for your property depends on its size, risk level, and whether you require insurance-compliant monitoring.
Burglar Alarm Types
Bells-Only Alarms
A bells-only alarm activates a loud external siren when triggered. There is no monitoring or managed response capability — the sounder acts as an audible deterrent and alerts neighbours or passers-by.
Bells-only systems are suitable for lower-risk residential properties where the goal is deterrence rather than managed response. They are typically the most affordable option.
Monitored Alarms
A monitored burglar alarm is connected to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre. When triggered, operators follow a pre-agreed response protocol, which may include verifying the alarm, contacting keyholders, or liaising with police where the system and response requirements are met.
Many commercial insurance policies require a monitored system, and for many residential properties, monitoring provides a level of managed response that an audible alarm alone cannot match.
Wireless and Smart Alarms
Wireless alarm systems use battery-powered sensors with no fixed cabling. They connect to a smartphone app for remote control, instant alerts, and live updates.
This makes them a practical choice for homes and smaller businesses where running cables would be disruptive or impractical. Smart alarm systems also suit rented premises or listed buildings with restrictions on structural changes.
Police Response Alarms
Police response alarms are normally Grade 2 or Grade 3 systems designed, installed, monitored, confirmed, and maintained in line with the relevant police alarm policy and current BS 8243 requirements.
Eligible systems can be registered for a Unique Reference Number, which allows police response through the recognised alarm signalling route where the activation is confirmed and response requirements are met. These systems are used for higher-risk commercial premises, businesses storing high-value assets, and properties where police response forms part of the security plan.

What is the Difference Between a Security Alarm and a Burglar Alarm?
A burglar alarm — also called an intruder alarm — is specifically designed to detect unauthorised entry into a property. A security alarm is a broader term that covers multiple detection systems, including burglar alarms, fire alarms, CCTV, and access control.
All burglar alarms are a type of security alarm, but a security alarm system may include additional layers of protection beyond intrusion detection. At Bell, our intruder alarm installations can be integrated with CCTV, access control, and fire detection systems to build a complete security solution around your property.
Bells-only systems provide deterrence only, while monitored systems add verified response. Wireless systems prioritise ease of installation, whereas wired systems offer long-term reliability.
Standards & Compliance
Intruder alarm systems in Scotland are designed and installed in line with UK standards, including BS EN 50131 and PD 6662:2017, which define system grading, performance requirements, and installation practices.
Systems requiring police response must also comply with BS 8243:2021, which sets out the requirements for alarm confirmation and response procedures. Compliance with these standards is typically required for insurance approval and police response eligibility.
How Our Burglar Alarm Installation Works
Knowing what to expect takes the uncertainty out of the process. Here is how a typical intruder alarm installation works from first contact to a fully operational system.
Free Site Survey
An NSI-approved engineer visits your property to assess entry points, blind spots, and your specific security priorities. We look at the layout, the number of zones required, cable routing options, and any areas of particular concern. There is no obligation and no charge.
System Design & Quote
Based on the survey, we specify a system suited to your property type, occupancy, and risk level. You receive a fixed-price quote covering all equipment, installation, configuration, and commissioning. No hidden costs.
Professional Installation
Our engineers carry out the installation with minimal disruption. Cables are concealed where possible, detectors are positioned for full coverage, and all equipment is securely fitted and tested. Most residential installations are completed in a single day. Commercial projects typically run between one and three days depending on scale and the number of zones.
Commissioning & Training
Once installed, we commission the system, verify every detector, and set up app access where applicable. We walk you through arming, disarming, zone management, and what to do if the alarm activates. You will leave the handover knowing how to use the system confidently.
Ongoing Support & Maintenance
After installation, you can add 24/7 ARC monitoring to your system. We also offer planned maintenance contracts to keep everything performing correctly. If a fault develops, our engineers are available for call-out repairs, with priority response for contract customers.
For Homeowners
Burglar Alarm Systems for Your Home
A professionally installed home burglar alarm system is one of the most effective deterrents against break-ins. Research consistently shows that properties without a security alarm are significantly more likely to be targeted — a visible system changes the risk calculation for anyone considering a break-in.
We have installed burglar alarm systems in over 160,000 homes across Scotland. Every residential installation is designed around your property, with options for wireless setup, pet-immune sensors, smart app control, and optional 24/7 monitored response. Whether you want an affordable bells-only system or a fully monitored intruder alarm connected to our ARC, we specify the right system for your home and your budget.
Residential system options:
Our engineers will visit your property, assess your entry points and layout, and recommend the most suitable setup. You get a clear, fixed price before any work begins — and a system you know how to use before we leave.

Commercial Intruder Alarm Systems
Designed to protect larger premises, multiple entry points, and high-value assets — graded to NSI or SSAIB standards under BS EN 50131, compatible with police response protocols, and compliant with most commercial insurance policies.
For businesses, the stakes are higher and the compliance requirements are specific. The system grade, monitoring setup, and installation standards all have a direct impact on whether your insurer will accept the installation and whether you qualify for police response.
We install commercial intruder alarm systems for retail premises, office buildings, warehouses, schools, industrial sites, and public sector organisations across Scotland.
Burglar Alarm Grades Explained
Commercial alarms are classified by grade under BS EN 50131. The grade determines the level of risk the system is designed to address, and most commercial insurers specify a minimum grade as a condition of cover.
Grade 1
Suitable for low-risk domestic use or low-value commercial properties. Basic detection with straightforward installation.
Grade 2 Most common
Required by most commercial insurers. Suitable for offices, retail units, and light industrial premises with moderate risk.
Grade 3
For high-risk premises or properties storing high-value assets. Recommended where a heightened threat level is established.
Grade 4
The highest classification. Used in banks, cash-handling premises, data centres, and critical infrastructure where maximum protection is required.
All Bell commercial alarm systems are specified and installed in line with PD 6662:2017 and BS EN 50131 by our NSI-approved engineers. We provide a certificate of conformity on completion, confirming your system meets the required standard for insurance and police response purposes.
24/7 Alarm Monitoring Services
Our intruder alarm systems can be connected to a BS 5979-approved 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centre. This is not a call-handling service — it is a manned security operation with trained operators dedicated to your protection.
When your alarm is triggered, our operators are immediately alerted and can dispatch police, keyholders, or a security response — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Police Response
Requires a Unique Reference Number (URN). When our ARC operators verify an activation, they can request a police response directly. Eligible systems must meet Grade 2 or Grade 3 requirements under BS 8243:2021.
Keyholder Response
An approved contact responds in the first instance. This is the most commonly used option for residential properties and lower-risk commercial premises.
Most commercial and landlord insurance policies require a monitored burglar alarm system. Our ARC-monitored installations include an NSI/SSAIB certificate of conformity — accepted by all major UK insurers.
What’s Included in Our Alarm Systems
Every Bell intruder alarm system is professionally designed and installed to include the components your property requires.
Control Panel
The central hub of the system. It monitors all connected sensors and triggers the alarm response when a detection event occurs.
PIR Motion Detectors
Passive infrared sensors that detect movement within a defined zone. Available in pet-immune versions for homes with animals.
Door and Window Contacts
Magnetic contacts fitted to entry points that trigger the alarm when a door or window is opened without the system being disarmed first.
External Siren and Strobe
The audible deterrent. It activates on alarm, alerts neighbours, and draws attention to the property. The strobe can continue after the siren cycle to show an alarm has triggered.
Alarm Keypad
Allows occupants to arm and disarm the system using a PIN code. Smart systems can also be controlled through a mobile app.
24/7 ARC Monitoring
Optional connection to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre, where trained operators respond to activations around the clock and follow the agreed response protocol.
Remote App Control
Smart and wireless alarm systems can connect to a mobile app, giving you live alerts, arm and disarm control, and system status from anywhere.
Warning Signs and Stickers
Visible deterrents installed at entry points and boundaries. Clear signage can make it obvious that the property is protected by an alarm system.
Why Choose Bell for Your Burglar Alarm Installation?

How Much Does a Burglar Alarm Cost?
The cost of a burglar alarm system in the UK typically ranges from £300 to £1,500 or more for supply and installation, depending on the system type, number of sensors, and whether monitoring is included.
The main factors that affect price are:
Type of System
Bells-only systems are the most affordable. Fully monitored Grade 3 systems for commercial premises sit at the higher end of the range.
Property size
Larger properties with more entry points require additional sensors, detectors, and zones. The more components the system needs, the higher the installation cost.
Monitoring
24/7 ARC monitoring is charged as an ongoing monthly subscription, separate from the installation cost. The monthly cost depends on the system type, monitoring requirements, and response setup, and will be confirmed before the contract begins.
Installation complexity
Wireless systems are generally quicker and less disruptive to install than hardwired systems, which can involve more labour depending on cable routing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Burglar Alarm Systems
A burglar alarm system is an electronic security network that detects unauthorised entry through sensors, activates an audible alert, and — in monitored installations — sends an automatic notification to a 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centre or emergency services. The system consists of a control panel, detection devices such as PIR sensors and door contacts, an external sounder, and a keypad for arming and disarming.
There are four main types: bells-only alarms, which trigger an external siren with no monitoring; monitored alarms, which connect to a 24/7 ARC; wireless and smart alarms, which are app-controlled with no fixed cabling; and police response alarms, which are graded systems eligible for direct police dispatch via a Unique Reference Number (URN). The right type depends on your property, risk level, and insurance requirements.
Supply and installation typically ranges from £300 to £1,500 or more, depending on the system type, number of sensors, and whether monitoring is included. 24/7 ARC monitoring is an additional monthly cost, usually from around £20 to £40 per month. The most accurate way to get a price is through a free site survey, where we assess your property and provide a fixed-price quote.
A burglar alarm is specifically designed to detect unauthorised entry into a property. A security alarm is a broader term covering multiple systems, including burglar alarms, fire alarms, CCTV, and access control. All burglar alarms are a form of security alarm, but a full security alarm system may include additional protection beyond intrusion detection.
For most commercial properties, yes. Most commercial insurers require a monitored system connected to an NSI or SSAIB-approved ARC as a condition of cover. For residential properties, monitoring is optional — but it adds a direct response capability that a bells-only system cannot provide. If you travel frequently, live alone, or want police response capability, monitoring is worth serious consideration.
Most alarm systems should be serviced at least once a year. For commercial properties, particularly those connected to a police URN or subject to insurance conditions, bi-annual servicing is often required. Regular maintenance checks confirm that every detector is functioning correctly, the panel is operating within specification, and the monitoring connection is live.
Yes, provided your system meets the required standard. Police response alarms must be Grade 2 or Grade 3 systems installed and commissioned to BS 8243:2021. Once verified, your system is registered for a Unique Reference Number (URN), which enables the police to respond directly to a confirmed activation from your ARC. Bell handles URN registration as part of the commercial installation process.
For most commercial insurance policies, a monitored burglar alarm is a condition of cover, particularly for premises storing high-value stock or equipment. Residential policies vary — some require or reward an alarm installation, while others do not specify it. We recommend checking your policy schedule and, if required, providing your insurer with the NSI certificate of conformity we supply on completion of every installation.
This depends on your property type and risk classification. Grade 2 is the minimum required by most commercial insurers and is suitable for offices, retail, and light industrial premises. Grade 3 is required for higher-risk properties or where police response is needed. Grade 4 applies to banks, cash-handling premises, and critical infrastructure. Our business development team will assess your site and specify the appropriate grade during the free site survey.
