What Is a Home Security System?
A home security system is a combination of devices and services that work together to detect intruders, monitor your property, and alert you or a response centre when something goes wrong. It is designed to protect your home whether you are inside it, at work, or away on holiday.
A professionally installed home security system typically includes a combination of:
The difference between a professionally installed system and a DIY alternative comes down to how it is specified, how it is fitted, and what happens when it activates. A professionally installed and NSI-certified system is designed around your property with no blind spots, meets the standards required by your home insurer, and can qualify for a police response through a Unique Reference Number. Most DIY systems — ring doorbells, self-installed cameras, standalone sensors — are app-based only. They notify you, and then it is down to you to decide what to do next.
Home Security for Every Homeowner
Every home is different, and every homeowner has different reasons for wanting protection. Here is how Bell helps across the most common situations.
For Homeowners
You want to feel confident that your home is protected — not just alarmed. Whether you have had a break-in nearby, you travel regularly for work, or you simply want the peace of mind that comes with knowing your property is covered, a professionally installed system gives you protection you can rely on.
We visit your home, assess your entry points, garden layout, and the areas that are most vulnerable, and recommend the right combination of systems for your property. You get a clear, fixed price before any work starts. No jargon and no upselling on equipment you do not need.
For Families
Protecting your family is different to protecting an empty building. You want a system that is easy to use day-to-day, does not generate false alarms when the children come home from school, and gives you genuine peace of mind when everyone is in bed.
We install systems that are straightforward to operate, with user codes for different family members, app access so you can check the system remotely, and motion detection that is configured to avoid false activations from pets. When your alarm does trigger, when your alarm activates, our Alarm Receiving Centre responds immediately — contacting your nominated keyholders or alerting the police…
For Holiday Home Owners
A property that sits empty for weeks at a time is significantly more attractive to opportunists than a regularly occupied home. Without professional monitoring, there is nobody to notice until the damage is done.
We install and monitor home security systems for holiday properties across Scotland. When your alarm activates, our Alarm Receiving Centre responds immediately — contacting your nominated keyholders or alerting the police — without requiring you to be within driving distance or even reachable on your phone.
Types of Home Security Systems
What are the main types of home security systems available? There are five core system types, and most professionally installed setups combine two or more of them into a single integrated solution.
Camera Types
Burglar Alarm Systems
A burglar alarm system detects unauthorised entry and triggers a response — a siren, an alert to your phone, or an activation at an approved Alarm Receiving Centre. It is the core detection layer of any home security setup and the system most commonly required by home insurers.
Bell installs Grade 2 intruder alarm systems to BS EN 50131, which is the standard recognised by many insurers and often required where police response eligibility or insurer compliance is needed. Your system includes door and window contacts, strategically positioned motion detectors in agreed internal areas, and a control panel with user codes for different household members. We offer both wired and wireless options. Wireless systems are ideal for rented properties or listed buildings where cable installation is restricted — they can be relocated when you move home.
CCTV and Security Cameras
Home CCTV records activity around your property, provides visual evidence if an incident occurs, and acts as a visible deterrent to anyone considering your home as a target. It is also the feature most homeowners want to access remotely.
We install domestic CCTV systems with HD and 4K cameras covering driveways, front and rear entrances, and gardens. Every system includes remote viewing via app so you can check live and recorded footage from your phone wherever you are. Night vision is standard on all cameras we install. For properties where cable routing is difficult, wireless cameras are available.
Door Entry Systems
A video door entry system lets you see and speak to whoever is at your front door from any room in the house — or from your phone if you are not home. It adds an extra layer of security and the convenience of being able to manage deliveries, visitors, and contractors without opening the door.
Bell installs wired and wireless video door entry systems with colour cameras, two-way audio, and app integration. More advanced door entry setups include smart access control so you can unlock the door remotely for trusted visitors.
Heat and Smoke Detection
Smoke detectors save lives. But a single battery-powered detector in a hallway is not the same as a properly specified and interlinked smoke detection system. For larger homes, properties with multiple floors, or any home where the risk of fire spreading before it is detected is a concern, a Grade D or Grade A interlinked system provides meaningfully better protection.
Bell installs interlinked optical smoke detectors, heat alarms for kitchens, and carbon monoxide alarms where carbon-fuelled appliances are present. In Scotland, homes are required to have interlinked smoke alarms in the main living area, smoke alarms in circulation spaces on each storey, and a heat alarm in the kitchen. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance, but they do not need to be interlinked with the smoke and heat alarms.
For HMOs, rented properties and larger residential buildings, the required system grade can vary depending on the property type, occupancy and local authority licensing conditions. Bell can advise on the appropriate fire detection setup during survey.
24/7 Remote Monitoring
Remote monitoring connects your home security system to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre, where trained operators respond to activations around the clock. When your burglar alarm triggers, operators follow a pre-agreed response protocol, which may include verifying the alert, contacting your nominated keyholders, or liaising with the police where the system and response requirements are met.
NSI-approved monitoring is normally required for an intruder alarm to qualify for a Unique Reference Number and police response through the recognised alarm signalling route. Without a Police Unique Reference Number, an intruder alarm system will not normally qualify for police response through that route. Police attendance depends on the system being correctly installed, monitored, confirmed, maintained, and registered in line with police alarm policy.
For homeowners who travel regularly, have a holiday property, or simply want reassurance that an activation will not rely on them noticing a phone notification, professional monitoring provides a managed response layer.
Smart Home Security Integration
Modern home security systems can be controlled and monitored from your phone, integrated with smart home platforms, and configured to send instant alerts when activity is detected. You can arm and disarm your alarm remotely, view live camera feeds, receive push notifications from motion sensors, and manage access without a physical key.
App-based control is available across the systems we commonly specify, with integration options depending on the equipment selected. It gives you visibility and confidence wherever you are — whether you are at work, on holiday, or checking that the children got home safely.
How Our Home Security System Installation Works
Here is exactly what to expect from your first contact with Bell through to a fully installed and operational home security system.
Free Home Security Survey
One of our Bell surveyors visits your home to assess your property layout, identify vulnerable entry points, and discuss what matters most to you. We look at door and window positions, external lighting, garden boundaries, and any specific concerns you have. There is no charge and no obligation.
Bespoke Written Proposal
Based on the survey, we design a system matched to your home and your budget. You receive a fixed-price written proposal covering all equipment, installation, and commissioning. No hidden costs. The proposal explains exactly what is being installed, where, and why — so you know what you are getting before anyone picks up a tool.
Professional Installation
Our NSI-accredited engineers carry out the installation with minimal disruption to your home. Cables are concealed where possible, sensors are positioned to give the right coverage without cluttering your rooms, and all equipment is installed to Grade 2 standard under BS EN 50131. A typical home installation takes one day.
Commissioning and Handover
Once installed, we commission and test every device on the system. We set up your app access, configure remote viewing on your phone, set user codes for household members, and walk you through the system so you are fully comfortable using it from day one.
24/7 Monitoring and Ongoing Support
After installation, you have the option to connect your system to our Alarm Receiving Centre for 24/7 professional monitoring. We also offer annual maintenance visits to keep your system performing correctly. If something develops a fault or needs updating, our engineers are on hand for call-out repairs.
Home Security System Features
Here are the features that make a professionally installed home security system worth the investment.
NSI Gold Accredited Installation
Every home security system Bell installs is fitted under Bell Fire & Security’s NSI Gold approved procedures, with intruder alarm systems specified to the appropriate grade where required. NSI Gold is widely recognised by insurers and police forces for professionally installed intruder alarm systems. Without an approved installer, approved monitoring arrangement and a valid police URN, a monitored intruder alarm will not normally qualify for police response through the recognised alarm signalling route.
24/7 ARC Monitoring with Police Response
When your alarm activates, signals are handled by an approved Alarm Receiving Centre. Operators follow your agreed response protocol, which may include verifying the alert, contacting your nominated keyholders or liaising with the police where the system, monitoring and URN requirements are met. This means that when you are asleep, at work or away from home, your alarm activation does not rely on you noticing a phone notification.
Remote App Control
Arm and disarm your alarm from your phone. View live and recorded camera footage. Receive instant push notifications when a sensor triggers or a camera detects movement. Everything is available from a single app, from anywhere with a signal.
Motion Detection and Smart Alerts
Our systems are configured to distinguish between meaningful activity and background movement, reducing false alerts significantly. You get notified when it matters — not every time a car passes the end of your driveway.
Wired and Wireless Options
Bell offers both wired and wireless home security systems. Wired systems are the most reliable choice for permanent installations. Wireless systems are ideal for rented properties, listed buildings, or homes where cable routing is impractical — and they can be taken with you if you move.
Full Integration
CCTV, burglar alarm, door entry, and smoke detection all work together as a single system. When your intruder alarm triggers, your cameras record. When your front door opens, the system logs it. An integrated setup closes the gaps that separate products leave open.
Control Your Home Security from Anywhere
Modern home security systems are built around your phone. Once your system is installed and connected, you have full control from any device, anywhere with a signal.

- Live camera feeds Watch what is happening at your property in real time from your smartphone or tablet.
- Remote arm and disarm Set your alarm from your car, your office, or the other side of the world.
- Motion and activity alerts Receive instant push notifications when a sensor or camera detects activity at your home.
- Smart access Unlock your front door remotely for trusted visitors without needing to be home or leave a key.
- System status at a glance See at any moment whether your alarm is set, which zones are active, and whether any faults have been flagged.
Bell's systems are compatible with leading smart home platforms. Remote control can be built into any system we install.
DIY Home Security vs Professional Installation
It is worth being clear about what the two options actually offer, because the difference matters more than most people realise.
Self-Installed & App-Controlled
Self-installed, app-controlled, and require no ongoing contract. They suit renters, people who move frequently, or homeowners who want basic deterrence at a low entry cost.
- You receive a notification when an alert triggers — and decide what to do
- No professional response unless you pay for an optional monitoring subscription
- Monitoring standards vary significantly between providers
- Not typically certified to the standard required by insurers
Certified, Monitored & Police-Linked
A Bell business development manager surveys your property and designs a system with no blind spots — installed to Grade 2 standard, certified, and qualified for police response.
- A trained operator responds when your alarm activates — not just your phone
- Meets the Grade 2 standard required by most home insurers
- Qualifies your alarm for a police Unique Reference Number (URN)
- Commissioning certificate provided for your insurer at handover
Professional installation is the right choice when:
Your home insurer requires a certified alarm system as a condition of cover
You want your alarm to qualify for a police response via a Unique Reference Number
You travel regularly or have a holiday property that sits unoccupied
You want the peace of mind that comes with knowing your system was designed and fitted correctly
Choosing the Best Home Security System in Scotland
Which home security system is best in the Scotland? The honest answer is that it depends on your property, your insurer, and what level of response you need. But there are some clear standards that separate genuinely protective systems from ones that look good in a box.
NSI and SSAIB Accreditation
The two recognised schemes for security system installers in the UK and Scotland. Both are independently audited and recognised by insurers and police forces. If your installer does not hold one of these accreditations, your system cannot qualify for a police response and may not satisfy your insurer's requirements.
Police Response via Unique Reference Number (URN)
Only available to alarm systems installed and monitored by NSI or SSAIB-approved companies. A URN is the identifier that links your alarm to the police database. Without it, if your alarm activates and someone calls 999 on your behalf, the police are not obliged to attend.
Grade 2 and Grade 3 Alarm Systems
The grades specified under BS EN 50131. Grade 2 is the standard required by most home insurers for a monitored system. Grade 3 applies to higher-risk properties. If your insurer requires a Grade 2 system and your installer cannot confirm the system meets that standard, your cover may not be valid following a break-in.
Insurance Recognition
Many home insurance policies offer reduced premiums for properties with certified alarm systems. Some specify accreditation as a condition of cover. We provide the commissioning documentation your insurer needs and confirm the standard your system is installed to at the point of handover.
Bell’s Standard
Bell holds NSI Gold accreditation — the highest available standard — and installs all residential burglar alarm systems to Grade 2 under BS EN 50131. Where the system is designed, installed, maintained, monitored and registered in line with police requirements, it can qualify for a Police Unique Reference Number and police response.

NSI Gold is the highest standard for security system providers in the UK and Scotland. It is independently audited and recognised by home insurers, police forces, and industry bodies. When Bell installs your home security system, you receive certification that confirms your alarm meets the standards required for insurance compliance and police response eligibility.
Trusted Since 1919
Bell Fire & Security has been protecting homes across Scotland for over 100 years. That is not a statistic — it is a track record. It means we have installed systems in every type of Scottish home, in every kind of location, and for every kind of homeowner. Over 60% of our business comes from repeat customers and referrals, which reflects what our service actually looks like after the installation is done.
24/7 Monitoring from Our Alarm Receiving Centre
Bell's Alarm Receiving Centre is staffed around the clock by trained operators. When your home alarm activates, they respond straight away — verifying the alert, contacting your keyholders, and liaising with Police Scotland if required. You do not need to be awake, available, or near your phone for your home to be protected.
Accredited Engineers
Every Bell engineer holds industry-recognised qualifications and relevant manufacturer certifications. Our residential installation team is trained to current BS EN 50131 standards and receives ongoing development as products and regulations change. When someone from Bell arrives at your home, they are qualified, security-vetted and background-checked where required, and accountable for the quality of their work.
Full Lifecycle Service
We do not install and disappear. From the initial home security survey through to commissioning, annual servicing, reactive repairs, and 24/7 monitoring, everything is handled by the same team. One point of contact, one set of system records, and a phone number that connects you to someone who knows your property.

Home Security System Servicing and Monitoring
A home security system needs regular attention to stay reliable. Sensors drift, backup batteries degrade, and software updates affect how devices communicate. A system that has not been checked in two years may still look operational — but there is no guarantee it will perform when it needs to.
What A Service Visit Includes
Bell's residential maintenance visits cover a full functional test of every sensor, detector, sounder, and device on your system. We check the control panel for any logged faults, test backup battery condition, clean detectors where needed, and confirm that remote viewing and app connections are working correctly. Every visit is documented and you receive a written service record.
Monitored vs Self-Monitored Home Security
With a self-monitored system, you receive an app alert when your alarm activates. What happens next is down to you — whether you are awake, available, and willing to call the police yourself. For many homeowners, that works well enough during the day. At 3am, on holiday, or when your phone is on silent, it is a different picture.
With professional monitoring through Bell's Alarm Receiving Centre, trained operators respond to every activation day and night. They assess the alert, try to reach your keyholders, and contact Police Scotland if the situation warrants it. You do not need to be available. The response happens regardless.
Professional monitoring is the higher protection option, and for holiday homes, regularly unoccupied properties, or any home where a delayed response to a break-in would cause serious harm, it is the appropriate choice. .
Repairs and Call-Outs
If a sensor develops a fault, a battery fails, or a panel starts behaving unexpectedly, our engineers are available for reactive call-outs. We carry common parts and aim to resolve issues quickly so your home is never without full protection for longer than necessary. Customers on a maintenance contract receive priority scheduling.

How Much Does a Home Security System Cost?
Home security system installation costs vary depending on property size, the systems you choose, and whether you include 24/7 monitoring. Here are the main factors that determine what you will pay.
Property size and layout
A two-bedroom flat requires fewer sensors and cameras than a four-bedroom detached house with a garage and side gate. More entry points, more rooms, and larger gardens mean more devices and more installation time.
System type and combination
A burglar alarm alone costs less than a fully integrated system with CCTV, door entry, and smoke detection. The right combination depends on what you want to protect and what your insurer requires.
Wired vs Wireless
Wired systems involve more installation labour for concealing cables but carry lower long-term equipment costs. Wireless systems are quicker to install and suit properties where cable routing is impractical, but the wireless devices themselves cost more than their cabled equivalents.
Maintenance
Annual servicing keeps your system certified and functioning correctly. We offer maintenance contracts that cover your annual visit, documentation, and priority call-out cover.
Monitoring
24/7 ARC monitoring is optional with a monthly fee. Self-monitored app alerts included as standard.
The most accurate way to understand your costs is through a free home security survey. We visit your property, assess what you need, and provide a fixed-price written proposal covering all equipment, installation, and commissioning. No obligation and no pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Security Systems
For most homes in the Scotland, the best security system is a professionally installed Grade 2 intruder alarm with 24/7 ARC monitoring, combined with CCTV covering the main entry points. The specific combination depends on your property size, insurer requirements, and whether you want police response capability. We assess your home and recommend the right setup during a free survey — there is no single package that suits every property.
The most protective home security systems in Scotland are those installed by NSI or SSAIB-accredited companies to Grade 2 or Grade 3 standard under BS EN 50131. These are the only systems that qualify for a police Unique Reference Number and satisfy the requirements of major home insurers. Bell holds NSI Gold accreditation and installs all residential alarm systems to Grade 2 as standard.
Installation costs vary based on property size, system type, and whether monitoring is included. A wireless alarm for a small flat will cost significantly less than a fully integrated system with CCTV, door entry, and fire detection across a larger detached house. The best way to get an accurate figure is through a free home security survey, where we provide a fixed-price written proposal with no obligation.
Self-monitored alarms send app alerts to your phone. You receive the notification and decide what to do. Professionally monitored alarms connect to our Alarm Receiving Centre, where trained operators respond to every activation day and night, contact your keyholders, and liaise with the police if needed — without requiring you to be available. If you travel regularly, own a holiday property, or want the assurance of a professional response, monitoring is the right choice.
For your alarm to qualify for a police response, it must be installed by an NSI or SSAIB-accredited company, connected to an NSI-approved Alarm Receiving Centre, and registered for a Unique Reference Number (URN) with Police Scotland. Bell installs and monitors systems that meet all three requirements. We handle URN registration as part of the commissioning handover.
A typical residential installation takes one day. This covers fitting all sensors, cameras, and the control panel, running and concealing cables where required, commissioning the system, configuring app access, and walking you through everything. We confirm the timeline at the quoting stage and schedule the work to suit you.
Grade 2 and Grade 3 are performance standards defined under BS EN 50131. Grade 2 is the standard required by most Scottish home insurers for a monitored alarm system. Grade 3 is specified for higher-risk properties — those with higher-value contents, previous break-ins, or specific insurer conditions. Grade 3 systems require a higher standard of detection capability, tamper resistance, and monitoring infrastructure. We confirm the right grade for your property based on your risk profile and insurer requirements during the site survey.
Yes. Bell installs includes app-based remote access if requested. You can arm and disarm your alarm, view live and recorded CCTV footage, receive push notifications from motion sensors, and check your system status from any device with a signal. Remote access is configured during commissioning and is available from day one.
Yes. Bell installs both wired and wireless home security systems. Wireless systems are particularly well suited to rented properties, listed buildings, and homes where cable routing through walls and ceilings is impractical. Wireless devices communicate via radio frequency rather than cable, and can be relocated if you move home. We advise on the right option for your property during the survey.
