What Is a Business Security System?
A business security system is a set of integrated technologies designed to protect commercial premises, the people inside them, and the assets they contain. It combines detection, deterrence, and response into a single coordinated setup that works whether your building is occupied or empty, open or locked.
A complete commercial security system typically includes some combination of the following:
The difference between a consumer-grade system and a professionally installed commercial system comes down to specification, installation quality, and what happens when something goes wrong. A professionally installed system is designed around your building, meets insurer and police response standards, and is maintained to perform reliably year after year. Off-the-shelf systems are not.
Business Security Systems for Every Sector
Every commercial premises carries different risks, different compliance obligations, and different consequences if security fails. Here is how we help across the main business types we work with.
For Business Owners
Your stock, equipment, data, and staff are all at risk if your premises are not properly protected. The cost of a break-in goes well beyond the immediate loss — insurance claims, operational downtime, and staff welfare all carry a price. The problem most business owners face is not knowing what level of protection they actually need or what a compliant system should cost.
We carry out a free site survey, assess your risk profile, and recommend a system that fits your premises, your budget, and your insurer’s requirements. You get a fixed-price proposal before any work starts, and a system that is installed, commissioned, and maintained by the same accredited team.
For Operations Managers and Facilities Managers
You are responsible for keeping the building running, managing contractors, and making sure compliance documentation is in order. A security system that generates false alarms, requires repeated call-outs, or produces service records that fail an audit is not just an inconvenience — it is a liability.
We provide integrated security systems with documented commissioning, twice-yearly servicing, and a single point of contact for everything from a triggered alarm to an equipment fault. Every maintenance visit is recorded and available for your compliance file.
For Property Managers & Landlords
Managing multiple commercial properties means security cannot be handled on a site-by-site basis with different contractors, different systems, and different records. You need consistency, central oversight, and one relationship that covers your whole portfolio.
We install and maintain networked security systems with remote access across multiple sites. Our maintenance contracts are structured to cover your full portfolio under a single agreement, and our monitoring team responds to activations around the clock so you are not the first call at 3am.

Types of Business Security Systems
Choosing the right commercial security system means understanding what each component does and how they work together. Here is a plain-English breakdown of the main system types and what Bell’s offering includes for each.
Commercial CCTV Systems
Commercial CCTV records and monitors activity across your premises, provides visual evidence in the event of an incident, and acts as a deterrent to theft and trespass. It is the most visible component of most business security setups.
Bell installs HD and 4K IP camera systems for businesses of all sizes. Our commercial CCTV includes dome cameras for internal coverage, bullet cameras for perimeter and car park surveillance, and PTZ cameras for large sites where operators need to track movement in real time. Every system includes remote viewing via app so you can check your premises from anywhere.
Both wired and wireless options are available. Wired systems are the more reliable choice for permanent commercial installations. Wireless systems suit listed buildings, rented premises, or situations where cable routing is impractical.
Intruder Alarm Systems
An intruder alarm system detects unauthorised entry and triggers an alert — to you, to a monitoring centre, or to a police response route where the system, monitoring, confirmation and URN requirements are met. It is the core detection layer of any business security setup.
Bell installs Grade 2 and Grade 3 intruder alarm systems to BS EN 50131, the standard recognised by many Scottish and UK commercial insurers. Our systems include door and window contacts, passive infrared motion detectors, shock sensors, and dual-technology detectors for environments where false alarms are a concern. All systems are fully documented and commissioned to the relevant standard.
Access Control Systems
Access control manages and records who enters your building, which areas they can access, and when. It replaces physical keys with credential-based entry — cards, fobs, PIN codes, or biometrics — and gives you a complete audit trail of every entry and exit event.
Bell installs standalone and networked access control systems for businesses from single-door offices to multi-site commercial estates. Our systems can integrate with CCTV so that door events are cross-referenced with camera footage. For businesses with high staff turnover, access control reduces the cost and security risk of re-keying locks.
Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
A commercial fire alarm system is not just a legal requirement — it is the difference between an orderly evacuation and a preventable tragedy. The right system for your business depends on your building category, occupancy, and the findings of your fire risk assessment.
Bell designs and installs conventional and addressable fire alarm systems in line with BS 5839-1, within our BAFE SP203-1 certified scope. We cover systems ranging from smaller conventional office installations to addressable fire alarm systems for larger or higher-risk commercial premises, where required by the fire risk assessment.
24/7 Remote Monitoring
Remote monitoring connects your intruder alarm, fire alarm, or CCTV system to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre, where trained operators respond to activations around the clock. When a detector triggers, operators follow the agreed response protocol — which may include contacting keyholders, verifying the alert, or liaising with emergency services where the system and response requirements are met.
Bell connects monitored systems to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre for 24/7 signal handling. NSI-approved monitoring is normally required for an intruder alarm to qualify for a Unique Reference Number (URN), which is required for police response through the recognised alarm signalling route. Without the correct approved monitoring arrangement and a valid URN, the system may not qualify for police response. For businesses that hold stock, operate outside normal hours, or have high-value equipment on site, professional monitoring should be strongly considered.
Smart and Remote App Monitoring
Modern business security systems can be managed remotely through a secure app, giving you live camera feeds, alarm status, access control logs, and push notifications from any device. You can arm and disarm your system remotely, review recorded footage, and receive instant alerts when activity is detected — all without being on-site.
Bell systems are compatible with leading remote monitoring platforms, depending on the equipment selected and system configuration. Whether you manage one premises or a portfolio of sites, app-based monitoring gives you visibility and control wherever you are.
Business Security System Installation: Our Process
Knowing what to expect before you commit to an enquiry makes everything easier. Here is exactly how a Bell business security installation works from first contact to a fully operational, certificated system.
Free Site Survey
A specialist Bell surveyor visits your premises to assess your security risks, review your insurance requirements, and discuss your priorities. We look at entry points, high-risk areas, cabling routes, existing systems, and any compliance obligations that affect the specification. There is no charge and no obligation.
Bespoke Proposal
Based on the survey, we design a system matched to your premises and your budget. You receive a fixed-price written proposal covering all equipment, installation labour, commissioning, certification, and any applicable documentation. No hidden costs. No surprises after the work is done.
Professional Installation
Our trained Bell engineers carry out the installation to BS EN 50131 for intruder alarm systems and BS 5839 for fire alarms. Cabling is concealed where practical, equipment is installed to manufacturer standards, and disruption to your business operations is kept to a minimum. Most small to mid-size commercial installations are completed within one to three days.
Commissioning, Certification, and Handover
Once installed, we commission and fully test every device on the system. You receive a commissioning certificate, a complete record of all installed components and zones, and a handover walkthrough covering how to operate your system, how to respond to an activation, and who to call if something goes wrong.
Ongoing Support, Monitoring, and Maintenance
After installation, your system requires regular servicing to maintain certification and insurance compliance. We offer maintenance contracts covering twice-yearly inspection visits for alarm systems and annual visits for other installations. Connection to our Alarm Receiving Centre for 24/7 professional monitoring is available as part of your ongoing service package.
Business Security System Features
Here are the features that separate a professional commercial security installation from an off-the-shelf alternative.
NSI and BAFE Accredited Installation
Bell Fire & Security holds NSI Gold approval for relevant security system work and BAFE SP203-1 registration for fire detection and alarm work within its certified scope. Installations are carried out by trained Bell engineers and documented against the relevant standard for each system. These are not optional extras. They are the standards required by major UK insurers and, for intruder alarms, the prerequisite for police response eligibility. Without an appropriately approved installer and the required monitoring/maintenance arrangements, your system may not satisfy insurer conditions or qualify for a police URN.
Grade 2 and Grade 3 Intruder Alarms
Bell installs intruder alarm systems to Grade 2 and Grade 3 under BS EN 50131. Grade 2 is the standard required by most commercial insurance policies. Grade 3 is specified for higher-risk premises — financial institutions, jewellers, and premises with high-value stock — and requires a higher standard of detection, tamper resistance, and monitoring. We confirm the right grade for your premises during the site survey.
24/7 ARC Monitoring with Police Response
Our Alarm Receiving Centre monitors connected systems around the clock. When a verified alarm activates, operators escalate immediately — contacting keyholders, dispatching a physical response, or liaising with the police as required. Police URN eligibility normally requires an intruder alarm system to be installed, maintained and monitored through approved providers in line with police requirements.
Integrated Systems
A business security system performs best when its components work together. Bell installs fully integrated setups where your CCTV, intruder alarm, access control, and fire alarm share a single management platform. When an access door is forced, your cameras record. Where appropriate, access control can be configured to support the building’s fire strategy, including releasing designated doors on fire alarm activation where required. An integrated system closes the gaps that separate products leave open.
Remote Access and App Control
Check live camera feeds, arm and disarm your alarm, review access logs, and receive push notifications from any device with a connection. For facilities managers overseeing multiple sites, remote access removes the need to be physically present to respond to an incident or verify a system status.
Full Documentation and Compliance Records
Every Bell installation produces a complete commissioning certificate and system record. Every service visit is documented. This paperwork is not bureaucracy — it is the evidence your insurer needs to confirm compliance, the record your fire authority may review, and the audit trail your operations team requires for due diligence.
Why Choose Bell for Your Business Security System?
"Every site is different. We spend time on the survey because getting the camera positions right is what separates a system that works from one that just records blank walls."
— [Name], [Title], Bell Fire & SecurityNSI Gold Accredited
NSI Gold is the highest standard for security system providers in Scotland and the UK. It is independently audited and recognised by UK insurers, police forces, and industry bodies. When a business chooses an NSI Gold accredited installer, the system it receives meets the strictest quality and compliance requirements. For commercial premises, NSI Gold accreditation is the prerequisite for police response through a Unique Reference Number — without it, the police will not attend an alarm activation.
BAFE SP203 Certified
BAFE SP203 is the recognised third-party certification for fire alarm system installation in the UK. It confirms that the certified company has been independently assessed against BS 5839 and related standards. Many UK insurers require or strongly prefer BAFE-certified installers, and fire authorities use BAFE registration as a benchmark when assessing compliance. Our certification means your fire alarm documentation will stand up to scrutiny.
Trusted Since 1919
Bell Fire & Security has been protecting businesses across Scotland for over 100 years. That is not a headline — it is a track record. Generations of engineering experience, thousands of completed commercial installations, and a client retention rate that reflects consistent, reliable service over decades. Over 60% of our business comes from repeat customers and referrals. That figure says more than any accreditation.
24/7 Monitoring from Our Alarm Receiving Centre
Our Alarm Receiving Centre is staffed around the clock by trained operators. When an alarm activates, they assess the situation, verify the alert, and take the right action immediately — whether that is calling your keyholder, dispatching a response team, or contacting the police. This is a manned security operation, not an automated call forwarding service.
Full Lifecycle Service
Bell does not install and move on. From the initial site survey through commissioning, annual servicing, reactive repairs, system upgrades, and 24/7 monitoring, everything is handled by one team. One point of contact. One set of system records. No gaps between contractors who do not communicate with each other.

Commercial Security System Maintenance and Monitoring
A security system that has not been maintained is a liability, not an asset. Detectors drift out of alignment, cameras develop faults, control panels log errors that nobody checks, and battery backups degrade without warning. When an incident happens, you find out whether your system was actually working. Planned maintenance makes sure it is.
What Maintenance Includes
Bell's commercial security maintenance contracts cover full functional testing of all detectors, sensors, call points, and devices. We inspect control panels for logged faults, check backup power condition, clean and calibrate devices where needed, and produce a written service record for your compliance file. All visits are carried out against the relevant British Standard — BS EN 50131 for intruder alarms, BS 5839 for fire alarms.
| Interval | Service Type | Who Can Do It |
|---|---|---|
| Twice Yearly | Intruder alarm servicing | Qualified alarm engineer — inspect, test, and service the system in line with BS EN 50131 to help maintain certification and insurer compliance |
| Twice Yearly | Fire alarm servicing | Competent fire alarm engineer — inspect, test, and service the system in line with BS 5839-1 |
| Annually (minimum) | CCTV system check | Competent CCTV engineer — inspect cameras, recording equipment, and system performance to confirm the system is operating correctly |
Repairs and Emergency Call-Outs
If a detector fails, a panel develops a fault, or storm damage affects your external sounder, our engineers are available for reactive call-outs. We carry common replacement parts and aim to resolve issues quickly to minimise any gap in your coverage. Customers on a maintenance contract receive priority scheduling and call-out cover as part of their agreement.

Monitored vs Unmonitored Business Security
With an unmonitored system, your alarm sounds when it triggers and it is down to whoever is available — a member of staff, a keyholder, or a passing member of the public — to call the emergency services. Outside business hours, this gap in response can cost you considerably.
With professional monitoring through Bell's Alarm Receiving Centre, every activation is responded to by trained operators 24 hours a day. They verify the alert, contact your nominated keyholders, and liaise directly with police or emergency services as required. For premises left unoccupied overnight, warehouses with high-value stock, or any business where a delayed response to an incident carries serious consequences, professional monitoring is the appropriate level of protection.

How Much Does a Business Security System Cost?
Commercial security system costs vary based on premises size, system complexity, number of devices, and whether monitoring is included. There is no single figure that applies to every business, but here are the main factors that determine what you will pay.
Premises size and layout
A small retail unit with a basic intruder alarm covering two zones costs significantly less than a multi-floor office building requiring a fully integrated system with CCTV, access control, fire alarms, and 24/7 monitoring. The more access points, rooms, and risk zones your premises has, the more devices and cabling the installation requires.
System type and grade
A Grade 2 intruder alarm costs less than a Grade 3 system. A conventional fire alarm costs less than a fully addressable one. The specification is driven by your building, your risk level, and what your insurer requires — not by what is cheapest.
Number of cameras and devices
More cameras, more detectors, and more access control points mean higher equipment and installation costs. The per-unit cost typically falls as the system scales, but a larger system always carries a higher total investment.
Wired vs wireless
Wired systems may involve more installation labour for cable routing. Wireless systems carry higher equipment costs but reduce disruption and installation time. For occupied commercial premises or listed buildings, wireless can represent better overall value.
Monitoring
Connecting your system to our Alarm Receiving Centre is an ongoing monthly cost. The monitoring connection equipment is a one-off installation expense. NSI-approved monitoring is required for police response eligibility — this affects both specification and ongoing cost.
The most accurate way to understand your costs is through a site survey. We visit your premises, assess your risks and compliance obligations, and provide a fixed-price proposal that covers all equipment, installation, commissioning, and certification.

Our Accreditations and What They Mean for Your Business
Bell Fire & Security holds the accreditations that matter most when a business owner or facilities manager is choosing a security installer. Here is what each one actually means for you.
For businesses in Scotland, fire safety duties sit under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006. BAFE SP203-1 registration supports third-party certificated delivery of fire detection and alarm work, but the dutyholder remains responsible for ensuring the fire safety arrangements are suitable for the premises.

NSI Gold
NSI (National Security Inspectorate) Gold is the highest standard for security system companies in the UK. It is awarded following independent audit of installation quality, engineer competence, documentation, and ongoing compliance. NSI Gold accreditation means your intruder alarm system qualifies for a Unique Reference Number (URN), which is the prerequisite for police response to an activation. Major Scottish insurers recognise NSI Gold as evidence that a system meets their requirements — it can reduce your premium and, in some cases, is a condition of cover. Certificate Number 52048/NCS-G.
BAFE SP203
BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) SP203 is the third-party certification scheme for companies that design, install, commission, and maintain fire detection and alarm systems. It confirms independent assessment against BS 5839. Fire authorities and insurers use BAFE registration as a standard benchmark when assessing fire alarm compliance. BAFE Registered Organisation ID: 301902.
Constructionline
Constructionline is a procurement and supply chain management service used across the UK & Scottish construction sector. Membership confirms that Bell meets health, safety, and quality standards required to work on construction sites and within principal contractor supply chain.
SELECT
SELECT is the trade body for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland. Our SELECT membership confirms our electrical installation work meets the standards required by Scottish building regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Business Security Systems
The right system depends on your premises, your risk level, and what your insurer requires. For most commercial properties, a professionally installed and NSI-certified intruder alarm with 24/7 ARC monitoring and integrated CCTV provides the highest level of protection and the strongest compliance position. Grade 2 systems are suitable for most businesses. Grade 3 is required for higher-risk premises. We confirm the right specification during a free site survey.
The four core types are intruder alarm systems, CCTV and surveillance systems, access control, and fire detection and alarm systems. Most commercial premises benefit from a combination of all four, with 24/7 monitoring connecting them to a response centre. The right combination depends on your building type, occupancy, and risk profile.
There is no single answer because costs vary significantly with premises size, system type, device count, and monitoring requirements. A small business with a basic alarm and two cameras will cost considerably less than a multi-floor commercial installation with integrated CCTV, access control, fire alarms, and ARC monitoring. The most accurate way to get a figure is through a free site survey, where we provide a fixed-price written proposal with no obligation.
If your insurer requires police response capability or your insurance policy specifies a Grade 2 or Grade 3 alarm with monitoring, then yes — your installer must be NSI or SSAIB accredited. Only accredited installers can issue the certifications required for a police Unique Reference Number (URN). Without a URN, the police will not attend an alarm activation. Bell holds NSI Gold accreditation, the highest available standard.
For your alarm to qualify for a police response in Scotland, it must be installed by an NSI or SSAIB-accredited company, connected to an NSI-approved Alarm Receiving Centre, and registered for a Unique Reference Number (URN) with your local police force. Bell installs and monitors systems that meet all three requirements. We handle the URN registration process as part of the commissioning handover.
Most small to mid-size commercial installations are completed within one to three days. Larger projects involving multiple systems, extensive cable routing, and integration across several floors or sites may take longer. We confirm the installation timeline during the quoting stage so there are no surprises, and we schedule work to minimise disruption to your business operations.
Yes. Bell’s Alarm Receiving Centre is staffed around the clock by trained operators. When your alarm activates, they verify the alert and respond immediately — contacting your keyholders, dispatching a physical response if required, or liaising with the police. Monitoring is available for intruder alarms, fire alarms, and CCTV systems, and can be added to new or existing installations.
