What is an intruder alarm system?

An intruder alarm is a security system commonly used to prevent or mitigate various crimes, such as burglary, robbery, malicious damage, and arson. It operates by detecting motion or sound when you’re not in the building and then sounding a loud siren to alert occupants or authorities.

These alarm systems are widely recognized by insurers, subject to meeting certain basic criteria. The BS EN 50131 series provides comprehensive European standards for intruder alarm systems, covering aspects like system components, detectors, control equipment, warning devices, and motion detectors. These standards ensure the effectiveness and reliability of intruder alarms, offering peace of mind and robust protection for homes and businesses.

How do intruder alarm systems work?

Intruder alarms work by detecting unauthorized entry into a protected area. Below is how they function:

Closed-Circuit System

In a closed-circuit system, the electric circuit is closed when a door or window is shut. Electricity can flow from one end of the circuit to the other as long as the door remains closed. If someone opens the door, the circuit is opened, interrupting the flow of electricity and triggering an alarm.

Open-Circuit System

In an open-circuit system, opening the door closes the circuit, allowing electricity to flow. The alarm is triggered when the circuit is completed by the intruder

Magnetic Sensors

A common component in closed-circuit alarms. Consists of a magnet and a switch. When the door or window is closed, the magnet keeps the switch closed, completing the circuit. If the door or window is opened, the magnet moves away, breaking the circuit and activating the alarm

Motion Detectors

These sensors detect movement within the protected area. Commonly used in modern intruder alarm systems. When motion is detected, the alarm is triggered.

Control Box

Central to modern systems. Sounds the alarm until deactivated by a security code. Prevents intruders from easily silencing the alarm.

Comprehensive Systems

Advanced alarms may include additional features like glass-break sensors. These cover the interior of a property, creating a comprehensive security system beyond perimeter protection.

Benefits of an intruder alarm

An intruder alarm offers several benefits, making it a valuable addition to homes and businesses alike:

The most obvious benefit of an intruder alarm is protection. Many of our homes contain valuable assets that we want to keep safe and secure. The alarm acts as a deterrent, steering thieves away from these valuable items.

Reduced crime rate

Criminals tend to avoid areas where they know they’ll get caught. Having an intruder alarm ensures that the improvements you make to your home stay protected. This not only benefits your home but also your neighbors and, in some cases, the entire neighborhood.

Reduced insurance costs

Beyond peace of mind, having an intruder alarm can impact your insurance payments. Deterring theft helps decrease your financial outgoings, and being able to prove stolen items or damages can assist in making insurance claims.
