24/7 Alarm Monitoring Services for Homes & Businesses
Alarm monitoring is a 24/7 service in which an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) continuously monitors your fire and intruder alarm signals — alerting you, your keyholders, or the emergency services the moment your alarm is triggered. Bell Fire & Security provides professional alarm monitoring services for homes and businesses across Scotland, connecting your system directly to our NSI-certified ARC. Our alarm monitoring is handled through an approved Alarm Receiving Centre operating to recognised Scottish & UK standards, including BS EN 50518, BS 8591 and/or BS 5979 Category II where applicable. This helps ensure alarm signals are received, assessed and escalated quickly and reliably, 24/7
- Certified ARC Monitoring — 24/7 monitoring through an approved Alarm Receiving Centre, with certification confirmed during setup
- NSI Gold Accredited — The industry’s highest standard for security system providers
- Over 100 Years of Experience — Trusted since 1919

Get a Business Monitoring QuoteWhat is Alarm Monitoring?
Alarm monitoring is the continuous, 24/7 remote surveillance of your fire and intruder alarm systems by a professional Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). When a sensor is triggered, the ARC receives an immediate alert and initiates the appropriate response — whether that is calling your keyholders, verifying the alarm, or dispatching police or the fire service in line with your response strategy.
Alarm monitoring supports intruder alarm systems (also known as burglar alarms), fire alarms, and other connected security systems.
An Alarm Receiving Centre is a staffed facility that operates around the clock, monitoring thousands of alarm signals simultaneously. Operators follow pre-agreed response protocols tailored to your property. They do not simply call you and hope for the best. If you cannot be reached, the process continues. Keyholders are contacted in sequence. Emergency services are dispatched if the situation demands it. The whole thing is logged and reported back to you.
Modern alarm monitoring services cover far more than intruder alarms. Professional monitoring can extend to fire alarms, CCTV systems, and lone worker safety — providing a single, unified layer of protection for residential and commercial premises of all sizes.
How Our 24/7 Alarm Monitoring Works
From the moment your alarm activates, our Alarm Receiving Centre takes over. Here is what happens at each stage.
Alarm Activated
A sensor in your home or business detects an intruder, fire, or emergency event and triggers the alarm signal. The system records the time, zone, and type of activation.
ARC Receives Alert
The alarm signal is received by the approved Alarm Receiving Centre. The activation details are displayed to the operator so the agreed response process can begin.
Operator Responds
The ARC operator follows your pre-agreed response protocol. This may include contacting keyholders, checking CCTV verification, or escalating the activation where the response requirements are met.
Response Dispatched
Your nominated keyholders, response provider, or emergency service may be contacted depending on the alarm type, verification status, URN requirements, and agreed response plan. The incident is logged for your records.
Types of Alarm Monitoring Services
Our monitoring centre covers all types of alarm systems — ensuring the right response is triggered for every type of emergency, every time.
Monitoring Types
Intruder Alarm Monitoring
When your burglar or intruder alarm is triggered, ARC operators follow your pre-agreed response protocol. This may include verifying the alert, contacting keyholders, or liaising with police where the system and response requirements are met.
Intruder alarm monitoring is available for homes, businesses, retail premises, and industrial sites — and is compatible with many common alarm systems, subject to survey and signalling requirements.
Fire Alarm Monitoring
For commercial premises, fire alarm monitoring allows the ARC to follow a pre-agreed fire response protocol, which may include contacting keyholders, responsible persons, or the fire and rescue service where appropriate.
Monitoring can form part of the response strategy for a fire detection and alarm system specified under BS 5839-1, depending on the fire risk assessment, premises use, occupancy, and insurer requirements.
CCTV Monitoring
When an alarm is triggered, operators may be able to access your CCTV feed to visually verify what is happening before escalating the response. This is particularly valuable for businesses where false activations are common.
Visual verification can help reduce unnecessary callouts, support URN protection where applicable, and provide clearer evidence when a genuine incident occurs.
Lone Worker Monitoring
Employees working alone in remote locations, out of hours, or in high-risk environments face safety challenges that standard alarm systems cannot address. Lone worker monitoring can provide welfare check-ins, panic button response, and escalation if contact is not made on schedule.
It is a practical way for businesses to support their duty of care obligations under health and safety legislation by providing a defined response route when a lone worker raises an alert or fails to check in.
Monitoring Response Options
Keyholder Response
When your alarm activates, the ARC contacts your pre-designated keyholders in the agreed sequence. This could be a family member, neighbour, staff member, facilities contact, or professional keyholding company who can attend the property, check the situation, and take the next step.
Keyholder response is suitable for most residential properties and lower-risk commercial premises where a managed response is required, but direct police response is not part of the security plan.
Police Response
For higher-risk properties, alarm monitoring can be configured to support police response where the system, monitoring, confirmation, maintenance, and URN requirements are met. This normally requires the alarm to be installed and maintained to the relevant standard and registered with a valid Unique Reference Number.
Bell can advise on the required specification and support the URN process where police response is appropriate. Police attendance is not guaranteed and depends on the activation type, confirmation status, false alarm history, and current police response policy.

For Homeowners
Home Alarm Monitoring Services
Our home alarm monitoring service provides 24/7 protection for your property and family. Whether you have an existing alarm system that needs connecting to an ARC, or you need a new alarm installed from scratch, we can have your home monitored within days of your first enquiry.
From the moment you leave for work, your home is continuously monitored. If an intruder triggers your alarm, our operators respond immediately. If you are unreachable, your keyholders are contacted next. If the situation requires it, police are dispatched. You do not have to be available for your home to be protected — that is the point of professional alarm monitoring.
Bell has protected over 160,000 homes across Scotland. That experience is built into how we design, install, and monitor every residential system.
What is included in our home alarm monitoring service:
- 24/7 ARC monitoring — continuous coverage, every day of the year
- Keyholder and police response options
- Compatible with all major alarm brands — no need to replace an existing system
- App-based real-time alerts to your smartphone
- Insurance-compliant certification on completion
How monitoring response works
Business Alarm Monitoring Services
Designed for commercial premises of all sizes — from single retail units and small offices through to warehouses, industrial facilities, and multi-site estates. NSI-compliant monitoring that meets your insurance requirements and protects your assets, staff, and operations around the clock.
NSI Gold Accredited ARC
Commercial premises that use monitored alarm systems are typically required to connect to a BS 5979-approved Alarm Receiving Centre. Bell's monitoring service is accredited to NSI Gold standards, ensuring your system meets your insurance policy requirements and qualifies for police response URN registration.
One Point of Contact
Intruder alarms, fire detection, CCTV, access control, and lone worker safety — all monitored through a single ARC with unified incident reporting and event management. One set of records, no gaps between disconnected systems.
What our business alarm monitoring covers:
Lone Worker Monitoring
Employees working alone — in remote locations, out of hours, or in high-risk environments — face safety challenges that a standard alarm system cannot address. Our lone worker monitoring service provides regular scheduled check-in calls, a dedicated panic button response, and automatic welfare alerts if contact is not made on schedule.
From a compliance standpoint, lone worker monitoring helps businesses meet their obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Our ARC operators follow defined escalation procedures, contacting supervisors, keyholders, or emergency services if a lone worker fails to respond within the agreed window.
How Much Does Alarm Monitoring Cost?
Professional 24/7 alarm monitoring in the UK typically costs between £15 and £50 per month, depending on the type of system, the level of response, and the accreditation of the monitoring centre.
Price depends on system type, response level, contract term, and ARC accreditation.
System Type
Intruder-only monitoring is generally cheaper than combined fire, intruder, and CCTV monitoring.
Response Protocol
Keyholder-only response costs less than police-response monitoring, which requires a graded system and URN registration.
Contract Term
Monitoring is typically offered on 12-month or 36-month contracts. Longer terms often come with a lower monthly rate.
ARC Accreditation
NSI Gold or SSAIB-approved ARCs may carry a small premium but provide the insurance-compliant certification many commercial policies require.
Existing System
If your alarm system is already installed and meets current standards, monitoring can often be added without additional hardware costs.
Monitoring costs are typically low compared to the potential cost of theft, damage, or business interruption following an incident. For a tailored alarm monitoring quote, contact us today — we provide transparent pricing with no hidden costs, and our team will confirm what your existing system needs before recommending the most cost-effective option.

The ARC operator follows your pre-agreed response protocol. This may involve calling your designated keyholders, verifying the alarm via your CCTV feed, or contacting the police or fire service directly — depending on the type of alarm, your response preferences, and the circumstances of the activation.
Response Dispatched
Your keyholders or the relevant emergency service are dispatched. The incident is logged in full, and a detailed event report is provided to you. You have a clear record of exactly what happened and when.
Why Choose Bell for Alarm Monitoring?
"Every site is different. We spend time on the survey because getting the camera positions right is what separates a system that works from one that just records blank walls."
— [Name], [Title], Bell Fire & SecurityBS 5979-Approved Alarm Receiving Centre
Our ARC operates to BS 5979:2007 — the UK's recognised standard for remote alarm monitoring centres. This is not a badge on a brochure. It is an independently audited certification that confirms our monitoring centre meets the operational, technical, and security requirements for professional alarm signal handling. For commercial buyers, it is the certification your insurance policy is likely to specify.
NSI Gold Accredited
NSI Gold is a leading third-party approval for security system providers in the UK and is recognised by insurers, police forces, and commercial clients. It is independently audited and recognised by insurers, police forces, and industry bodies across the country. When you choose an NSI Gold accredited company for your alarm monitoring, you know the service meets the strictest quality and compliance requirements available. Many insurance policies require or reward NSI Gold certification, which can contribute to lower premiums.
Trusted Since 1919
Bell Fire & Security has been protecting homes and businesses across Scotland for over 100 years. That is not just a number. It represents generations of engineering experience, tens of thousands of completed installations, and a reputation built on consistent delivery. Over 60% of our business comes from repeat customers — which tells you more about how we work than any sales pitch..
Complete Monitoring Coverage
We do not monitor a single alarm type and call it done. Our ARC handles intruder alarms, fire alarms, CCTV, and lone worker systems through a single monitoring operation. Unified incident logging and clearer records across connected systems, and a single point of contact for everything. No gaps between separate contractors, no question of who handles what in an emergency.
Insurance Compliance Statement
All Bell alarm monitoring services comply with BS 5979:2007 (the UK standard for remote monitoring centres) and are installed and commissioned in line with BS EN 50131. On completion, we provide an NSI certificate of conformity confirming your system meets your insurer's requirements. This documentation is required by most commercial insurers and available to residential customers on request.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alarm Monitoring
Alarm monitoring is a 24/7 service where a professional Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) watches your fire and intruder alarm signals remotely. When a sensor is triggered, the ARC receives an immediate alert and follows your pre-agreed response protocol — contacting your keyholders, verifying the alarm, or dispatching police or the fire service as required. It is the difference between an alarm that makes noise and an alarm that gets a response
Professional 24/7 alarm monitoring in the UK typically costs between £15 and £50 per month. The price varies based on the type of system monitored (intruder-only, fire, CCTV, or a combination), your chosen response protocol, contract length, and the accreditation level of the ARC provider. NSI Gold approved monitoring may carry a small premium but is often required by insurers. Bell provides a fixed-price monitoring quote after assessing your system — with no hidden fees.
The best alarm monitoring company is one that operates a BS 5979-approved ARC, holds NSI Gold accreditation, provides a documented response time commitment, and offers insurance-compliant certification. Bell Fire & Security meets all of these criteria — and has been protecting homes and businesses across Scotland since 1919. When comparing providers, ask to see their ARC certification, their accreditation body, and their average response time. These are the figures that matter, not marketing claims.
Many modern alarm systems include an app that sends push notifications when the alarm is activated. This is a form of self-monitoring, and it works well as a supplement to professional monitoring. However, app-based self-monitoring relies on you being available, awake, and able to respond — which is not always realistic. A professional ARC operates regardless of whether you are available, and can dispatch keyholders or emergency services automatically. For insurance compliance, most commercial policies require BS 5979-approved ARC monitoring rather than self-monitoring via an app.
Professionally monitored alarm systems are consistently identified as one of the strongest deterrents against residential and commercial burglary. Burglars are most likely to avoid properties where the risk of being seen, delayed, or challenged is higher. Good security usually combines visible deterrents such as CCTV, external lighting, strong door and window locks, and a maintained alarm system. A professionally monitored alarm adds an important response layer because an activation is handled through a defined process rather than relying only on a local siren or missed phone notification.
Our Alarm Receiving Centre receives and acknowledges alarm signals within seconds of activation. Operators respond to the alert immediately, following your pre-agreed protocol without delay. Response times are recorded for every activation and available to you in the incident report. If you are assessing providers, always ask for their confirmed ARC response time in writing — it is the most direct measure of monitoring quality.
Keyholder response means our ARC operators contact your pre-registered keyholders when your alarm is activated. Keyholders attend the property to check the situation and reset the alarm if appropriate. Police response means the ARC contacts the police directly. Police response requires your alarm system to be graded and verified to BS 8243 standards as currently applicable and registered with a Unique Reference Number (URN) from your local force. Police response is more appropriate for higher-risk premises, while keyholder response suits most residential and lower-risk commercial properties
An unmonitored alarm (also called a bells-only alarm) sounds an audible siren when triggered but does not contact anyone automatically. It relies on neighbours, passers-by, or the property owner noticing the sound and taking action. A monitored alarm connects to an ARC, which receives the alert immediately and follows a defined response protocol. Monitored alarms provide a guaranteed response; unmonitored alarms provide a noise. For insurance purposes, many commercial policies specify monitored alarms — and some require ARC accreditation to a specific standard.
For commercial properties, many insurers require or specify BS 5979-approved ARC monitoring as a condition of their security coverage. This is particularly common for retail, hospitality, and industrial premises. Residential insurers typically do not mandate ARC monitoring, but a monitored alarm may reduce your premiums or be listed as a preferred feature. Bell provides an NSI certificate of conformity on completion of your monitoring contract, which satisfies most insurer documentation requirements.
